tentaclemodThis is an exchange for writing a fanfic based on the wrong impressions you had before you actually consumed a canon. Therefore, it is a crack exchange, though you may take it seriously. Write your thing based on what little you've osmosed of the canon or based on what the title maybe evokes...what could go wrong?

What is this fanwork exchange about?
This is an exchange for creating fanworks based on first impressions and misapprehensions. Have you ever seen a title for a canon that left an immediate impression on you, but then you actually watched it and it was nothing like that first impression? Or your first impression of a fandom was why you wanted to watch the canon in the first place, and it did not turn out to be that way at all and you’re still mourning that original impression. Also, if you've never actually consumed the canon, but are very intrigued by it! Basically, if you want some cracky fics based on judging fandoms by their cover, come and join :D
Am I permitted to offer a canon I know nothing about?
You may not know more than osmosis. You are permitted to know less.
Can I request a thing if I know the thing?
Yes, as long as you don’t mind that your writer doesn’t.
How would this work?
We’re going to work with two freeforms here, a) what the person writing for you thought they knew by osmosis, or b) a prompt of what your osmosis tells you the canon is about (the point is not to research the fandom, but go with your gut instinct, or possible misreads). I’m calling the first one author!osmosis, and the second one recipient!osmosis, and for the second one I’m making descriptions mandatory because your author does not have a direct line to your brain.
Then, you’d be signing up to write or make art for the fandoms nominated in the tagset, and request fandoms nominated in the tagset, and after 5 weeks of writing time, we shall return and have fun reading.
Treats (works created for someone you aren’t assigned) are welcome! You don’t have to sign up to create a treat!
Nominations
- The tag set is located here: http://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/2304/
- You may nominate 10 fandoms.
Requests
- You must request a minimum 3 fandoms and a maximum of 10.
- You can request fanart or fanfiction, or both.
- There will be two additional freeform options. You have to choose one, but you may choose both.
Choose author!osmosis, if you want your author to write their own impression based on the title, and whatever they may or may not have osmosed (which may or may not be entirely off-base).
Choose recipient!osmosis, if you want to provide your author with prompts about what you think the canon/fandom is all about.
If you leave have no details at the time signups close and choose recipient!osmosis, I will use your signup as a sacrifice to the Elder Gods. (Seriously. Please don’t. I’m either going to delete your signup, or fill in some daft details myself.)
- Can I request a fandom if I know the fandom? Yes, as long as you assume your writer won’t! Basically, this is an exchange about the alternate premises apparent in cover/summary/title, or just excerpts from the canon in question, and if you’re sufficiently motivated to do something like that, then you’re very welcome!
Offers
- You must offer a minimum 3 fandoms and a maximum of 10.
- You may offer to create fanart, fanfic, or both.
Choose the author!osmosis tag if you want to create a fanwork of a canon you have not consumed.
Choose the recipient!osmosis tag if you want to create a fanwork of a canon where your recipient has not consumed the canon, and might have very interesting ideas on what it’s about. If you choose recipient!osmosis, you will have to write something your recipient prompted.
- Am I permitted to offer a canon I know nothing about? Yes, because it's funnier that way. You may not know more than osmosis. You are permitted to know less. (You may pretend that you know nothing about that fandom, too.)
Matching
- You will match on a fandom, a medium, and one of the two freeform tags. You are welcome to create a work for any request in your assignment even if it is not the one you matched on.
- If at the time signups close, someone does not have any potential recipients, I will contact them to see if they would like to add something. If not, their signup will have to be deleted.
Requirements
- Fic must be a minimum of 300 words.
- Art must be a nice sketch on unlined paper.
- Works should not include any of a person's Do Not Wants.
- Works must be made specifically for this exchange and can’t have been previously posted elsewhere or be part of a previously posted series.
Pinch Hits
- If you must drop out, please let me know right away, so that a pinch hit can be assigned.
- Pinch Hits will be posted to the dreamwidth community, here https://bravenewbork.dreamwidth.org/
Posting & Reveals
- Completed works must be posted to the AO3 collection (http://archiveofourown.org/collections/BraveNewBork2018) by the due date posted above. You will still be able to edit up until reveals.
In the interest of not getting flames/anon hate/whatever, you may want to tag your fic as an original work, or warn about the nature of your fic, however you want to do that. Please also don’t tag the usual characters or pairings, or if you’re using them, please make clear that it’s not the original character.
- Stories that are obvious placeholders at the time assignments are due will be considered a default and will go out as a pinch hit. If you have any further questions, feel free to comment here or contact me at tentaclemod@gmail.com.
